This was my seventh time going to the Sziget Festival. In total, I had to play over 50 hours at Sziget 2016 in just eleven days.
Sziget Express 2016
Together with DJ Iron-Ic, I prepared to play a big DJ marathon of 20 hours per ride on the Sziget Express A train. Too bad, the German technicians leading the train, decided to only let us play for 8 hours during the outward journey. It meant we had over 4 hours sleep this night, as opposed to zero on all the other editions.
Sziget 2016 pre party
Well rested, the night of arrival we teamed up with Instant Budapest again to organize a big Sziget 2016 pre-party. We played from 22:00 to 06:00 in the basement, one of my favorite venues in the world. We succeeded in getting a lot of Dutch festival travelers to Instant.
The next day, we played on the official Sziget 2016 pre-party on the A38 boat. We got a chance to play at the main stage again, which has an awesome sound system. Due to the line-up being a little less than last years, the party was average.
Sziget 2016 line up
The trend of big EDM DJ’s performing on major music festivals, tend to continue. It’s probably cheaper to book a big DJ than a big rock band. It could also attract a bigger and younger crowd.
Skill Behaviour at Sziget 2016
On the Sziget 2016 festival itself, I had to play on the ASUS Snowattack stage and on the VIP stage. I opened the ASUS Snowattack stage this year, which was great. The stage was pretty big and had a big roof and a two huge bars from Festival Travel. It was raining that evening, so it was packed just before I started playing. They scheduled me for a three hours long set during sunset. This was great, as I could start with some really nice liquid drum and bass building up to some harder drum and bass.
In the VIP area we played as the ‘Dutch Department’. It was too bad we could not play our own drum and bass. We had to play a lot of commercial music for all the staff, artists, press and VIP’s.
Sziget 2016 headliners
Headliners on Sziget 2016 included Rihanna, Muse, David Guetta, The Chemical Brothers, Sia, Manu Chao, Sum 41, Sigur Ros, Bastille, John Newan, The Lumineers, Afrojack, Parov Stelar, Kaiser Chiefs, Editors, Jess Glynne, Nicky Romero, Crystal Castles, Die Antwoord, MØ, Bloc Party, Bullet for my Valentine, Noel Gallagher, Jake Bug, Roisin Murphy and Fedde le Grand. As you can see, loads of big names. Rihanna disappointed and was over 30 minutes late. I really had no time to see all these names. The end show with fireworks was performed by Hardwell.
Sziget 2016 drum and bass
This was the first year wih a small 24 hour drum and bass stage, mostly playing neurofunk. Also, Hospital Records teamed up with Sziget. Just like last year. Maduk, now signed to Hospital Records, performed one of the best drum and bass sets I have seen in my life. He included some awesome unpublished remixes.
Other drum and bass DJ’s this year were Wilkinson, Chris.Su and Jade. Noisia performed under their new name ‘Outer Edges’. This was a great atmospheric show, but music wise it could not match the regular Noisia shows.
